Morpho Showcased Semantic Filter Technology That Improves Camera Image Quality

at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019


Tokyo, Japan – December 5th, 2019– Morpho, Inc. (hereinafter, “Morpho”), a global leader in image processing solutions and imaging AI solutions, announced today that it presented “Semantic Filter Technology”, a newly developed technology that has been optimized for the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 865 Mobile Platform, during a speech by Mr. Judd Heape, the Senior Director of Product Management of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a U.S. company, given at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019.

Typical conventional image quality improvement technologies apply a single image processing method, globally to the entire image. When such technologies are used, if noise reduction is applied to the entire image, for example, noise is reduced from the entire image but the details and the texture of the objects within the image that should be preserved may be lost.

The Semantic Filter technology showcased at this time uses a semantic segmentation technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize the meaning of respective pixels in an image, sorts the pixels in the image by category, and performs image processing, such as noise reduction, dynamic range compensation, edge enhancement, and defocusing appropriately for each category. The new technology thus realizes an improvement of image quality, with its ability to process images to increase clarity, and prevent deterioration of the details and texture of each object within an image that should be preserved.

In addition, the technology is capable of identifying the meaning of pixels for diverse categories such as a person’s hair and skin, fabrics, including clothes.

At the event, the staff from Morpho appeared on stage during a portion of Mr. Heape’s speech and introduced the technological advantages of Semantic Filter, optimized for the development platform of Snapdragon 865, the latest flagship platform by Qualcomm Technologies, announced at the event. This was one in a conversational style using a live demonstration and videos for Semantic Filter.
